When employees feel empowered they are more likely to act responsibly on behalf of the organization. Employees who are empowered own their work and the resulting outcome is beneficial to business. Leaders within an organization that can create an environment where employees feel additional personal responsibility for their work will see happier employees and increased productivity. What Does Employee Empowerment Mean?Employees do not gain a greater sense of responsibility when they are chosen to help plan an event or decide on a company lunch. Rather, individuals feel more accountable when they are given the authority to own their work and make decisions about their jobs. Empowerment like this does not include micro-managing nor does it include limitless authority. Managers must create boundaries for employees while allowing them the authority to make important decisions. Employees who are empowered might work autonomously and report updates to a manager on a weekly basis. Boundaries are important however, so individuals are certain what decisions can be made. Without clear boundaries attempts to implement this employee incentive may fail. Empowerment is about Motivating PeopleWhen employers take action to create a great place to work; employees notice. Retention improves as well as morale. Empowering employees is a great way to add to the many incentives offered within the organization. Incentives offered to employees help to motivate people and improve morale. Empowerment can truly motivate people when done correctly. This is not simply about delegating more work to employees. Employees must clearly understand the company’s vision and mission. Once employees understand the vision, they are given the power to take actions to achieve it. This puts employees in a partnership with corporate leaders. Everyone seeks to achieve the same goals. Employers must be prepared for what comes with employee empowerment. Individuals may challenge the status quo, new ideas may arise, and employees may take more chances. With this added sense of responsibility, employees within the organization should have the best interest of the company in mind. However, mistakes may be made and employers must be able to accept that fact and move on. Mistakes often lead to the greatest successes. Providing opportunities for employees to grow and flourish is a great way to encourage productivity and creativity. Employers should take advantage of the many ways to show employees appreciation and add incentives to the workplace. Empowering employees is an effective way to boost morale and move the company in the right direction.
