Learn how to identify when you are ready to make a career move, and the right steps to take to land the perfect job for you.

Sure, it is true that they call it ‘work’ for a reason – it is work. It is normal to not be happy each day at a job. But how do you know when the right time has come to truly make a career change? And, how are you supposed to go about making such a big change? There are many reasons we may feel ready to ditch our old office in search for a new one.

Stress

If your job has become too much of a stressor, it may definitely be time to make a move. Stress can affect mental and physical health. If your job is keeping you up at night, it is time to make a change.

No upward mobility

If you are feeling stuck it may be time to start the job search. If you have nowhere to go, do not find your work challenging, or if you are simply burnt out, you are not doing yourself any favors by staying in a position that is not allowing you to grow. A new opportunity may bring with it new challenges.

Pay

People often change careers in search for the obvious – higher pay and more respect.

So, you have come to the conclusion that you are moving on to bigger and better things. Now what? First, explore your options. Think about your hobbies, the things you like to do every day and the things you excel in. What positions are you qualified for? Narrow down your options, and look at local job boards to see what opportunities are out there. According to the U.S Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 2.8 million open job positions listed in the country in November 2008, so the right job is out there.

Next, take a look at your resume.

Make sure you have the most up to date information. Also, make sure you are promoting yourself in the best light. You want your resume to be short and sweet, but you also do not want to short change yourself. You should tailor your resume so that you showcase your specific qualifications for the job to which you are applying. And, as always, use spell check!

When applying for a job, always send a cover letter.

The cover letter may be your first and only chance at getting the employer to notice you. Put your best foot forward! Research the organization and the position, so you can make proper references in your cover letter. Tell them, in so many words, why you are the only choice for the job.

Sometimes, it is easy for job seekers to get discouraged. Always remember that you may not get a response the very next day. You may not get a response at all. You may have to apply for multiple jobs before finding the opportunity that is right for you. When you feel like you are ready to make a career move, if you work hard and make finding a job your job, you are sure to have success.
